Our bowling green is located within the Friendly Valley Country Club, which is a senior retirement community in Santa Clarita, California. The address is 19345 Avenue of the Oaks, Santa Clarita, CA 91321. See the MapQuest link below.

Please be advised that MapQuest may unnecessarily route you through a residential area, and to the wrong access gate to Friendly Valley Country Club.

Please follow the map shown in the link below. Turn off of Sierra Highway onto Friendly Valley Parkway at the corner where there is an Arco AM/PM service station, and proceed to the main entrance gate at Friendly Valley Country Club.

Pictures of our green and clubhouse are shown below. We have lights for night bowling, so in the hot summer months we bowl in the evening. In cooler months, we bowl in the afternoon. Our bowling schedule is shown below.



We invite any resident of friendly valley to come watch us play during the week, and to join our Club, if so inclined. The annual fee is small.



Any non-resident senior (55 years of age or older) can join as a guest player for a small fee. In addition, we make provision for non-playing spouses of members or non-resident guest players for a very small fee.



For residents or non-residents who are considering joining, we will provide a free trial period during which time we will provide free lessons and the loan of a set of bowls.

On Monday 25 Jan 2010, a reporter (Tammy Marashlian) from the Santa Clarita Valley Signal newspaper visited our green and interviewed Jack Quinn and Irma Patton.

On Thursday 28 Jan 2010, Tammy returned with a photographer who took several pictures of our members bowling. Tammy also interviewed Dorothy Mahan who had responded to a request to visit the green.

On Saturday 30 Jan 2010 the article written by Tammy, with several pictures taken by the photographer, was published.

On Saturday 30 Jan 2010, three members of the FVLBC (George Patton, Gerry Staack & Jack Quinn) attended the 2010 SWD (Men's Division) Annual General Meeting. Minutes of the meeting will be reported and posted later.

One outcome was that Jack Quinn was elected to be the SWD representative for the Central District, which consists of four clubs (Alhambra, Friendly Valley, Pasadena & Santa Anita).

Our last session, that had been rescheduled for Saturday 27 March at Alhambra was cancelled because of rain. The league officials awarded half of the available 30 points to each of out two teams.



A summary of our overall results is as follows:



Jan 9: Home. FV: 19 Santa Anita:11

Jan 16: Away. FV: 4 Santa Monica: 26

Feb 13: Away FV: 0 Hermosa Beach: 30

Feb 20: Home. FV: 25 Beverly Hills: 5

Feb 27: Default. FV: 15 Alhamba: 15

The first game was played on Saturday 9 January 2010 at Friendly Valley vs. Santa Anita. Our teams did well, as shown in the summary below. Following the summary is the group picture that was taken.

In the second session at Santa Monica, our Friendly Valley teams did not fare so well. In spite of those results, those of us who played enjoyed the experience. The results are tabulated below.

We did not fare well at Hermosa Beach. I did not obtain all of the score cards, so I do not have the detailed results. But, I know that we lost all three games, and none of them were close in regular point count.

From a tournament point standpoint, the score was:
Friendly Valley: 0
Hermosa Beach: 30

The Friendly Valley players who participated in the games were as follows: Bonnie Chisholm, Chuck Crawford, Jack Quinn & Joyce Quinn. Our hosts at Hermosa Beach were very gracious (except on the green). In spite of the results, we who participated enjoyed the encounter.

But, the only direction was up; and that is the path that our FV teams followed in the next session that was played at home on the following week.

The game here with Beverly Hills was re-scheduled for 20 Feb. Our teams did well, and won two of the three games, as shown on the summary below.



Further below is shown the group photo before for the morning Rinks game. We enjoyed the company of the Beverly Hills players, and plan on setting up some type of visitation schedule with them.

The re-scheduled session with Friendly Valley at Alhambra was cancelled for the second time.

The tournament officials divided the available tournament points as follows:

Friendly Valley: 15

Alhambra: 15

Holmby Park

We had a scheduled visitation date on 6 Mar 2010 with Holmby Park to be held here in Friendly Valley; however, the event was cancelled because of rain.

We now have a visitation game scheduled at Holmby Park on 20 Mar 2010.

Oxnard

We have two visitation games scheduled with Oxnard:

At Oxnard on Wednesday 18 August 2010.

Here in FV on Wednesday 10 November 2010.

The first quarterly meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, 5 January 2010 in the FV Conference Room starting at 6:30 PM. All officers and most chairpersons attended the meeting.

Several decisions were reached, as summarized below. These decisions have previously been transmitted to all members who have e-mail.

1) The every-day bowling schedule will be revised, effective immediately, to specify four designated bowling days per week (Tue, Wed, Thu & Sat). It was felt that the seven day format tended to dilute attendance on any given day.

2) Because of health reasons (temporary, we hope) George Pope has withdrawn as Vice President. Harriet Jacobson volunteered and was designated as acting Vice President, with Geo. Pope as Assistant.

3) No Intra-Club games will be held in January or February because of the activities of the SWD Winter League and AGM. The first set of intra-club games will be held on Saturday 13 March 2010. See announcement elsewhere within this website.

4) George Patton again raised the issue of the Poa annua takeover of the green. The President took an action item to see what can be done about resolving the problem.

5) Our first Winter League game will be held on Sat 9 Jan 2010 at FV vs. Santa Anita. The Social Chair (not present at the meeting) had stated earlier that she would support the activity.

Designated bowling days now are the following four days of the week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday.

During the winter months (starting about late October), we normally bowl in the afternoon starting at 1:30 PM.

During the summer months (starting about mid-May), we normally bowl in the evening starting at 6:30 PM.

We request all players to gather about 15 minutes before the start time, so that the "blind draw" can be organized.

Our next session of Intra-Club Tournament Games will be held on a Saturday in April, starting at 1:30 PM. Players are requested to wear white and bring $2 for the prize pot. The actual date will be posted later.

Free Hot Dogs & Soft Drinks will be served after the games to all participants and attendees, including visitors.

All residents of Friendly Valley, and non-resident seniors, are welcome to attend the games, participate in the free food and drink, and try their hand at lawn bowling.

Chairperson for this event is Harriet Jacobson with Bruce Hoitt as Assistant. It would be appreciated if some of the more robust members would volunteer to help them set up before the games.

The Social Chairperson, Dee Petrulis, will need help in preparing and serving the food and drink. Please contact her and volunteer your services.
